Olympic Fever
March 02, 2010

Unless you just crawled out from under a rock, you will know that Vancouver is in a state of recovery following 17 days of Olympic fever!!! If you live close by, you will already know just how rad this event was for our city. If you watched any of it on the news, although you probably saw some cool sports highlights, every media story I saw didn’t have a chance to capture how truly busy and alive even our downtown core was over these few weeks.
Being so close to the epicentre, I wanted to get a taste of just what was happening down town and at the many venues. I figured what better way to see and feel the Vancouver Olympic excitement than an urban ride through the downtown core. So away we went. A group of us grabbed our bikes, powered up our lights and hit the streets. Places like False Creek waterfront path, Granville Mall area and down by Canada Place were busier at 9:00 pm than I have ever seen them in the middle of the afternoon, even on the busiest summer days! Despite how truly hectic it was, people were keeping it super friendly and by in large having fun. A night life highlight is the laser light show that ran every night at the entrance to False Creek. You can also see the lights from the Cypress Bowl Olympic venue up on the North Shore Mountains.
We chose bikes as they allowed us to see 4 or 5 key areas of interest, all in one evening. In some cases had the entire route to ourselves but in other areas we had to get off and walk as the streets were so packed with people. We used cycle lanes to access the city core passing by Science World (Russia House), The Plaza of Nations, a bustling Granville St up to Robson. (we bailed out early though as it was so PACKED with people it was hard to even walk). We then headed over past the Zipp Line above Robson Mall down through the downtown core to Canada Place and checked out the Olympic Cauldron. We finished off the ride heading around Vancouver’s beautiful Stanley Park. A great event, a great city and a fabulous ride.
This ride just reconfirmed that bikes are the perfect way to get around in and amongst a city that is otherwise a commuter’s nightmare. There were a LOT of people here from all over the world and from what I can tell they were really, really enjoying their stay in our beautiful city.
If you want to see more photos of Vancouver during the Olympics have a look here
Cheers!
