DIRT NORCO RACE TEAM ANNOUNCES DIVERSIFIED 2013 ROSTER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

DIRT NORCO RACE TEAM ANNOUNCES DIVERSIFIED 2013 ROSTER

VANCOUVER, B.C., January 7, 2013 – Norco Bicycles partnered with Ben Reid and Dan Stanbridge of the Dirt Norco Race Team in 2010 and for 2013 the team is expanding to include three additional riders. Casey Brown, George Gannicott and Greg Callaghan will join existing team members Ben Reid and Dan Stanbridge to complete the newly diversified team.

Looking forward to the coming year’s racing, Ben Reid states, “I think 2013 is going to be the most exciting year yet for team Dirt Norco. It has always been our goal to use the team as a platform to help out new talent and we are pleased to announce our new teammates joining Dan Stanbridge and me for 2013. All of these riders have impressed us by their skills and achievements on different occasions during the 2012 season and we are delighted to bring them on board.”

Casey Brown is the first woman to join the Dirt Norco Race Team after a fantastic 2012 season where she won the Canadian National Championships, took 4th place at the Hafjell, Norway World Cup and finished 7th at the 2013 World Championships. Casey exclaims, “I am super stoked to be on a new team this year! Dirt Norco is well established and has awesome riders who I’m sure I’ll learn a ton of good things from. Right now I’m working hard and getting prepared for the next few months of training. I have some big plans for 2013 and am really excited to be with Norco!”

George Gannicott also joins the Dirt Norco Race team in his final year as a Junior. George comments, “I am really excited about joining Dirt Norco for 2013! It is a great opportunity to be part of the team and be with experienced riders like Ben and Dan. I’m keen to prove myself in 2013 and signing with the team will help me loads!”

In a shift of direction, the Dirt Norco Race Team has signed its first Enduro rider to the roster in the form of Greg Callaghan. Greg will represent the team on the new Enduro World Series in Europe and North America. Greg states, “Having looked up to Ben as the top Irish rider since I started mountain biking, it’s awesome to now be on the same team as him and super cool to see him passing on the love to another Irish rider by bringing me on board. I’m really looking forward to racing on the Norco bikes and flying the Dirt Norco flag next season.”

The addition of these three new riders allows the Dirt Norco Race Team to be better represented on the global race scene and diversifies the team across numerous categories. Norco’s PR Marketing Manager Pete Stace-Smith comments, “We are very excited about the additional riders on the Dirt Norco Race Team. The additional feedback on the Aurum platform will help continued development of our DH program and the addition of Greg will help establish Norco’s presence on the Enduro World Series and development of our all mountain platform. Best of luck to the whole team in 2013!”

Fish heads, Sun and Mud!

With the Xmas and new year holiday this week and some very wet weather in Wales, me and my girlfriend went to Mexico to catch some sun this holiday. We had a great time snorkeling with the locals…. i.e. the turtles and dolphins and some pretty sketchy looking creatures like a sting ray. It was amazing, you put your head under the water and it was like watching  ’Finding Nemo’ in real life. I was feeling quite chilled out about the whole thing until mid week when we went sailing in a catamaran along the coast….. One of the Mexican guys who had a fishing rod out the back of the boat got a bite, he started to real in in a big fish. It was pretty heavy so took ages to pull towards the boat. However all of a sudden as we expected the fish to come flapping towards us, the line went slack and a deep red blood stain floated to the surface shortly followed by a the head of a massive fish that had been bitten clean in half by a shark.

I was a little less adventurous after that…

All in all a great time and some much needed rest.

Touching down at Manchester airport boxing day morning after an Xmas of 30 degrees plus was a bit of a shock. We were greeted with horizontal driving rain and ice cold wind as we exited the plane (in board shorts and flip-flops…. not a wise move). Nevertheless I had missed my bikes and was keen to get out in the hills. A group of us went riding downhill in the mud at some local tracks the next day and had a great time. The local tracks were like an ice rink but riding really well. I actually love riding in the wet and sliding all over the place…. It is just the bits in-between that I don’t like, such as  getting changed by the side of the road in a storm, or rushing to the local electrical store to buy a new filter for the washing machine because all the mud annihilated the old one and I have no cloths left…… that sort of thing….

There was a great group of local young guns out riding which made all the difference and we had a top day on the bikes. Now I can’t end without saying a big thanks to @jeffparfitt66, the dad of Joe, an up and coming young lad who lives locally, Jeff spent the whole day as he does on many a weekend, shuttling the the whole group of us to the top of the hill. Legend.

Apologies for the rubbish photos…. in a battle between the weather and my iPhone, the weather defiantly won…!

All in all a good Xmas with lots of people off work and school to ride with. Just off to clean the mountain of muddy kit I have accumulated in the yard……

Happy New Year everyone.

A Pre-Holiday Man Flu

With the introduction of Norco’s athlete Blog, I would love to make my first post from this weekend something epic…… Heli drop on a bike perhaps…… cliff diving off the cost of south wales…. you know, your average day in the life of an extreme sports athlete…….
However if the truth be told, I spent most of this weekend in bed with MAN flu (note I write MAN in capitals to make it sound more legit!). I did make it out from between the sheets to brave the frantic bustle of Cardiff in the weeks leading up to Christmas for a spot of Xmas shopping. And to be fair I managed to tick off a good 50% of my Xmas shopping duties but eventually the hustling bustling Christmas cheer proved to much for me and I retired back to the house to rest up so I can get rid of this flipping cold (MAN flu in case you were wondering!).

As I write this, I realise I am being a bit pessimistic (probably just the MAN flu talking) because I also jumped on the train to the bright lights of London this week to see Nitro Circus. So cool you should check the show out if they perform near you.

Nitro Circus Live 2012: Vienna, Austria a Other video by MPORA

Everything from tandem backflips to jumping a mega ramp in an ice cooler, was a top show.

Anyway I am off to build a Mega ramp in the garden now…… if you google nitro circus you will see why….. as soon as I get rid of this MAN flu that is….

Hope you have a great Xmas.
until next time..

Life on the Dirt Road – Living the #BusLife

Words, photos and video by Jonathan Duncan

Life on the world cup circuit can be quite challenging, especially if you are running your own program. For riders, there is good reason for the frustration of a poor race run, or not qualifying. Most spectators don’t see the months put into training and organizing all of the logistics and equipment. They also miss the hours and days of travel the week before.

For the Dirt Norco Race Team it’s about loading up the bus and setting out across Europe. Rolling into Val Di Sol for round 2 of the World Cup Circuit, the first order of business was getting the pits set up which revolves around #buslife. Their vehicle is not only the core of the pit but it also serves as the accommodation, the restaurant, the media center, the mechanic shop and the evening pub. The next three days are consumed with course walks, practice and bike tuning followed by more practice and bike tuning. The hope is that when your time comes, all the hard work you have put in during the off-season and these crucial days prior pay off and you lay down a clean and fast run. In a game of fractions of a second, one bad bounce can end your weekend. Things didn’t go as planned in Italy but it is time to put that aside and do it all over again, this time in fort William. First though, the pit must be packed up, bikes cleaned and bus prepared for the road.

Ben Reid is insistent on doing all the driving between the races. While other riders have since flown home for a few days rest, the Dirt boys stay in the road, living in the bus as they drive across Europe. it doesn’t take long with all the confusing detours and foreign streets to get behind schedule. This means there isn’t time to “stop and enjoy the view”. You learn to adapt your life and your body to the road. “It’s a fine balance” says Dirt Norco rider Duncan Riffle “You need to stay hydrated, but without time for pit stops you can’t be the guy holding up the bus”

By the numbers we are one bus (#buslife), one driver (Ben Reid), two days, four dudes, five countries to cross, and we are six hours behind! It’s truly incredible to see what these athletes go through. We are all aware of the amazing talents they have on a bike. We cheer and watch in awe as they navigate the worlds hardest trails in any condition at top form. To see what they go through leading up to those finals, puts a whole new perspective on it. With fewer beds than passengers, we take turns getting a little sleep here and there as we make are way from Italy to Scotland. That is of course unless you are Ben. “If I’m alive, I’ll drive” and “I’m here to steer” are popular phrases that his co-pilots all know and understand.

Even the best laid plans can have setbacks and our trip was no different. We had hoped after a very full day of driving and a second full day on the horizon, that a good nights sleep at the ferry was in the cards. Unfortunately we arrived at 2:30am, to a very busy customs line and immigration office. Barely alive at this point I remember the customs agent holding the stamp above my passport, asking across to the agent holding Duncan Riffle’s passport and saying “You ok letting these guys in?” A pause, then the reply “Ya, I’m ok if you are ok” !Stamp! and we were in. The ferry across to England was at 4:30 for time for a quick nap.

Just after 6am Ben was back behind the wheel and we were on our way. We had all be pushed pretty hard the previous day and with supplies and energy low, a side of the road stop was required. I’m sure we all could have slept the entire day, but with a 10 hour drive still to go another quick nap was all we had time for. The drive North went well, back on Ben’s “local” roads we made good time and arrived into Fort William around 11pm. With much needed showers and laundry facilities we were finally able to crash for a few hours of well-needed rest.

No time to linger, there’s a long list to do. First up is to stock the bus. As it is the heart of the pit, it doesn’t move until after the event. So it needs to be stocked for all the riders and support staff for the next 4-5 days. This isn’t just the shopping, but also topping up the gas that runs the stove and fridge. Making sure the batteries are all charged and the water tank is topped up. Plus the old girl has to look her best, so a spot to wash her up is also required.

Then, like the well orchestrated team they are, the pit gets set up. The maps come out and pieces are assembled and in no time their cozy home is constructed. It’s been an absolutely pinned three days with everyone running on very little. Space is tight, good food is hard to come by, let alone time for a XC or training ride. These athletes have found their own ways to cope with life on the bus. Small little touches that remind them of being at home, or the cup of tea in the middle of a long day that just soothes the mind. And now where all I want to do is lay low and rest, these guys have to put it behind them and focus on the task at hand, concurring Fort William. You’d never need to ask any of them “Why do you do it?” as it’s so easy to see the passion they have. This is their life, it’s what drives them its what they live for.  This #buslife

World Cup Track Commentary

Dan Stanbridge is a fantastic athlete and this video just helps to prove that statement. It is one thing to ride a World Cup DH track but it is a totally different thing to provide commentary on the way down. This is a practice run from the recent world cup in South Africa. Have a look at the course and what it entailed getting down.

Dan unfortunately flatted in qualifying and was not able to compete in the finals. Next up is Italy in 10 weeks or so.

Getting Dirty with the 2012 Norco Aurum

The development of the 2012 Norco Aurum is pretty closely tied to Dirt Magazine through riders Ben Reid, Dan Stanbridge and the newest team addition Duncan Riffle. With the input of Ben and Dan and an arduous development process the result of this partnership is an all new breed of Norco downhill bikes – The Norco Aurum. Given the tie between Norco, the team and Dirt Magazine it is only fitting that the gear team at Dirt review the Aurum to give their 2 cents in the matter.

After a rigorous testing process, this is what they had to say. Want do download the article? Here is the PDF

Where do Ben and Dan Spend their Winters?

The UK is not always the best place to train in the winter. It can be very wet, cold and downright miserable. What to Dirt Norco Race Team riders Ben Reid and Dan Stanbridge do to escape this? For a break from the winter depression, the two head to Spain where they are able to hook up with Roost DH and have a riding vacation while getting in some key training time.

Roost DH put together a promo video with some of the local trails. Have a watch and see Ben and Dan shredding the Spanish hillsides.
