Rider Bio
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Ben Reid from Newtownards and I ride bikes! I’m not much of a trick ferret and just love going as fast as possible from point A to point B.
What has been your best riding experience so far? Any career highlights?
2007 has been my most consistent season to date; I had some top ten results, finished 3rd overall in the British and won the Irish Championships. All in all it felt like a pretty solid season and was a great experience. It’s for seasons like this and better that I am willing to put everything I have into racing my bike.
Where is your favorite place to ride, and what bike would you take?
Favorite place to ride my Aurum (dh bike) would be in the Alps, there are so many good trails throughout that mountain range. To ride my sight (all mountain bike I would go to Lake Garda in Italy. If I could chose one spot which has it all I would go to Whistler as it has everything you need to have a good time.
What is your favorite thing to do on a bike?
A one handed manual, or a skid!
What is your first memory of riding? What first got you into riding?
When my brother Johnny and I were kids we used to hold races around the housing estate, we would get all the kids involved and it was like the BMX GP of Newtownards. It was a mass start of about 20 kids, 4 laps round the block dodging cars, prams, lamp posts, kerbs and so on. Myself and Johnny thought we were Joel Smets and Jacky Martins and we even had the Kellogg's clickers rubbing on the back wheel so it sounded like we were on motorbikes. I once remember the police showing up mid race to tell us off and we Johnny was like "watch out mate there’s a big race on" he was like "that’s why I’m here son"
When you’re not biking what are you usually doing?
If I’m not out riding I’m usually working on stuff for the team or training, or drinking tea!
What are your goals for the next year or so?
My goals for this season are to be more consistent with my riding between practice and race runs and to make my way into the top ten again. Other than that to keep expanding the team to make it even better, it would be nice help an up and comer and get him on board the team as well.
What song on your iPod gets you pumped to ride right now?
Still has to be Rob Zombie, “more human than human”
What would your perfect day look like?
It’s good to mix it up a bit from day to day but something like this would be a good day. Wake up to some sunshine for a change! Load up the truck and head to the hills, ride with my mates all day, DH, MX you name it. Cups of tea flat out! Then after a long action packed day get the BBQ fired up, eat some steaks and have the craic after a good days riding.
