Quebec City

My voyage to Quebec has been very worthwhile so far. More and more I am judging the value of my trips against the emissions that were released to make it possible; its gotta have purpose

The first thing I am happy with is my involvment in the production by Velerium in downtown Quebec City last night. It was quite a scene that incorporated my trials show, along with a flow show, a jumping competition, street running (parkour), breakdancing, and live music. I was happy with my shows, but more so there were a few special moments chatting with the audience between shows. As a Canadian, I am also quite honored to be participating in part of the celebrations for Quebec's 400th birthday, Bon Fete Quebec, content d'etre ici!!

Todays show at Mont Saint Anne was really quiet, not a lot of people around, tomorrow should be the big day. I was glad to have the time to sit down for an interview with David Howard after my show, he's the Story Editor for Mountain Bike Magazine. As an accomplished journalist in a number of different fields, I'm really glad to have had the opportunity to have some deep conversations about not just riding, but life in general. I'm excited to see how this article unfolds in the magazine, perhaps a few month down the road.

I'll leave you with a short clip from one of the street runners from last night, whew!!!

BikEcology - Trial and Error Revisited

As seen in Mountain Biking Magazine...

By the time this article goes to print, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour will have shown the special edit of my segment from Kranked 6, “Trial and Error”, to over 100,000 people. In this film I share my instinctual feelings of concern when seeing or thinking about clear cutting a forest.

I often show this video at my school presentations, and while on tour up in Northern BC where forestry supports a large chunk of the population, I began feeling a little sheepish about showing it, as I certainly am no expert on the topic. In the film I reference the particular zone of forest where my trail is built, “this is one of the last remaining sections of mid elevation old growth on the BC coast, and it’s slated for clear cut.” Then one of the analogies I make in the film is that “it seems to me that clear cutting is exactly like a crash, and they’ve done it time and time again, and perhaps haven’t learned from their mistakes.” I didn’t want to insult those in BC that base their livelihood on the industry and give them a bad reputation from my generalizing statements. Perhaps they have learned, and perhaps there are some ecologically sound logging practices in effect.

Discipline:

Best Results:
Won most major comps I entered over the four years I competed. Retired from comps in favor of a more creative style of riding for demos and videos.

Favourite Course:
Well since I don't race, I have to say my fave terrain is Oceanside natural, wave molded rock, and drift logs.

Hobbies:
Woodcarving, yoga, and just hanging out in the sun.

Favourite Tunes:
Always changing, but grooving on the aussie Xavier Rudd right now.

Favourite Movie:
Tough one again, how about Singing in the Rain, this is when actors could act, sing, dance, and do stunts no problem.

Favourite Book:
Just reading a Bill Bryson book right now, great writer. I'm a non-fiction kind of guy.

Inspirations:
Inspired by anyone who is truly having fun and doing what they love for work.

Heard Saying (Quote):
You miss 100% of the shots you never take. (Wayne Gretzky)

What Pumps you up:
Watching smooth, controlled, and dynamic riding.

What makes you mad:
silly little tweaky injuries

What do you do to relax:
rent a movie, or drink tea. Tea is good.

What makes you smile:
seeing youngsters get excited about riding after I do a trials demo

What do you enjoy most about riding for Norco:
well the bikes for sure, but the people I have the opportunity to work with, everyone I know at Norco is stoked on riding! The standards for sponsorship are great. The most important questions I can relate to being sponsored by Norco is "Are you having fun and sharing that feeling with others?"...I love it!!

Anything Else:
Get out there and ride hard, progress at your own pace, ride the way you want to ride; don't get too caught up with results, but instead, just enjoy the learning process, it's all about having fun, ridiculous amounts of fun!
