Team H&R Block has made their way down to Northern California for some early season training and racing. Chris Prendergast and Garrett McLeod got the season started by racing the Madera Stage Race in Madera, CA. With a strong field of riders, Chris and Garrett worked well together and earned the team’s first win of 2014.
After a quick start, Garrett got into an eight-man breakaway for two of the five laps. The gap did not reach more than a minute and the hard chasing field eventually brought the breakaway back with 50km to go.
As Garrett’s group was caught, a rider countered and went away. Chris made a solo move that caused a reaction in the field. Garrett recognized an opportunity, “There was a really rough section of road and the field was riding really aggressively through this section, so I just covered all the moves and then attacked with another rider to bridge up to the solo rider” explained McLeod.
The breakaway worked well together and were going to be competing for the win. “I knew I had to wait fairly late to start my sprint because it was an uphill finish,” stated McLeod who took the win. “I enjoyed racing with Chris as we worked very well with each other. I am looking forward to the upcoming races where I will have our other teammates join us on the start line” states McLeod.
