Elite Mens Podium(1)     Norco Team Report – Mont Tremblant Canada Cup

Beautiful Mont Tremblant was the location of the first Canada Cup of the season and our first race as a full team.

Stoke was high leading into race day on Saturday. Everyone had spent some good time on the course and figured out the right lines. Mont Tremblant is a classic mountain bike race course; gnarly rocks and roots in the trees and a lot of climbing! The race also goes right through the village at the base of the mountain which makes it great for spectators and gives us athletes some extra motivation while racing. This year’s edition was a little different with the start changed to the bottom of the village which made for a little different race from the gun.

Leading into race day the weather and course conditions were the biggest question mark. With 40 plus mm of rain in the day leading up to the race the course was drastically different than the one we trained on during the week. It made for a fun and decisive race and Norco Factory Team came out on the sharp end with some great performances. Haley Smith and Evan Guthrie represented the team on the podium, both having amazing races to 5th place. With Olympians and previous World Champions in attendance these were truly impressive rides.

Let’s hear what each athlete had to say about the weekend of racing:

“The Tremblant Canada Cup was the first time the entire Norco Factory XC Team would be assembled at the same event this year. We took this time to really come together as a team and have plenty of inappropriate dinner time conversations. We made the most of the weekend, with some solid results from some solid riders.”

“Canada Cup #1 with Norco Factory Team, what a fantastic experience. Great riders, staff and people all living under one roof. I couldn’t ask for anything more!

The weather created one of the most epic races I have ever done! The already wicked Tremblant downhill was made much more gnarly because of the rain. It was a great race and solid rides by everyone!”

“Year six was just done and dusted at the Mont-Tremblant Canada Cup. This may be the best race I’ve ever had at this event.  Podium finishes at Canada Cups are always a goal, and with all, but one, of the top riders in Canada lining up, it was set to be a tough one! I had a great race and rolled in 5th, making for one of my better elite finishes because of the depth in the field. Huge thanks to all my sponsors and supporters; they truly help make these days and races possible. Norco support was key with the horribly muddy conditions.”

    -Evan Guthrie

“My 15th year at Tremblant and this place never gets old! The track always has a few surprises in store and the weather also spiced things up a bit to make for the very challenging opener to the Canada Cup season”

    -Andrew Watson

“After taking a year off from racing the Quebec Canada Cups, I was really excited to head back to Mont Tremblant and begin the Canada Cup season. I’ve never had an awesome race at Tremblant, but after a winter spent working on my technical skills, I was ready to rip it! Prepared for mud, rain, and challenging conditions, the elite women lined up alongside 2011 World Champion Catharine Pendrel as well as most of the fastest women in the country. The racing was tough, but I managed to round out the podium in 5th. The Revolver 27.5 was awesome, the conditions were a blast, and the team were all incredibly supportive of each other. Now it’s on to Baie-Saint-Paul!”

“Mont Tremblant is always one of the most fun races of the year, and this year was no exception. It was amazing to have the whole team together for some fun in the mud. Looking forward to the rest of the season with this amazing bunch!”

    -Cayley Brooks

“After a hard winter spent mostly at home in Nova Scotia I was eager to get my mountain bike season started. With a strong field and a challenging course the racing was world class. After a fun and exciting day of racing I finished up 8th. I am stoked on my ride and excited to improve. Baie-Saint-Paul Canada Cup, bring it on!
