Norco Factory Team Impresses at the Ontario Provincial Championships

    October 3, 2014

On September 21st, the Ontario Provincial Championships were held at Horseshoe Resort, near Barrie, ON. The Norco Factory Team had an extremely strong showing, with Evan Mcneely and Peter Disera taking gold and silver respectively in the Elite men’s category and teammate Haley Smith taking the gold in the U23 women’s category – her time also good enough for silver in the Elite women’s class. Cayley Brooks also had a good race, finishing 7th for the Elite women, while Norco Jet Fuel rider Brandon Etzl picked up 9th spot for the Elite men.

With those results, Disera and Mcneely finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the Elite men’s overall Ontario standings for the year, while Smith took the overall women’s U23 title!

Below is Evan Mcneely’s recap of the event. Congrats to all racers!

This would be the first time I raced Ontario mountain bike provincials in 4 years. With this race traditionally being late in the season, I have always had cyclocross or school conflicts getting in the way. Needless to say, I was excited to race at Horseshoe Valley Resort as I am always excited to race in Ontario. I would like to take this time to say that I am from Ontario; even though I reside outside of the GGTA (Greatest Greater Toronto Area), I do hold a valid Ontario race license.

After taking a week off the bike after mountain bike World Championships in Norway, I was not sure how my body would respond to the stress of racing again. However, once the gun blew, it was clear that I was feeling stellar and so I took the reins early and drove the pace. I had developed a gap, over second place, by the end of the first lap and just kept riding. I’d like to keep the cliché going by saying “without looking back”, but I did look back; frequently. I held the lead to the end to claim my first provincial mountain bike title.

Peter Disera was reeling me in over the second half of the race, bringing what was nearly a 2 minute gap   down to only 45 seconds. Peter finished second on the day and won the Ontario Cup series overall standing.

In the elite women’s race, Haley Smith started strong and survived the last few laps to finish second place to Mikaela Kofman. Haley was the first place U23 finisher and claimed the U23 women’s provincial mountain bike title. Cayley Brooks finished the season on a positive note after a difficult year.

This might be the last update of the year for the cross country mountain bike crew. I will be keeping the ball rolling with cyclocross updates every week until National Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 24th.
