VeloNews: Norco Search Ultegra Defines What a Great Gravel Bike Should Be
April 12, 2016
The 2016 Norco Search Ultegra scored high marks in VeloNews Magazine’s annual Buyer’s Guide, earning the top spot in the Gravel category.
Editors gathered for ten days in sunny Murrieta, California for what they described as “the most extensive test event in VeloNews history.” Bikes were tested by almost the entire VeloNews staff along with around 30 local racers and riders on a variety of challenging test loops that included everything from smooth, windswept flats to steep, pothole-ridden climbs. Gravel bikes were scored against six criteria, including comfort, versatility, build, value, handling, responsiveness and aesthetics.
Editors gave the Search 88.4/100, the highest score of any bike in the gravel category.
“The Norco Search Carbon defines what a great gravel bike should be. It feels like a race bike – stiff and responsive – but it’s incredibly comfortable even after long hours on bumpy gravel roads. The search also has clearance for up to 40-millimeter tires (as long as the road isn’t muddy), which adds comfort and inspires confidence on rougher roads. The geometry puts riders in a more upright and comfortable position (170mm head tube), while the longer wheelbase (1,019 millimeters) adds stability. Plus, the Search’s bowed seat stays work like micro-suspension to reduce road vibrations without sacrificing pedaling efficiency to deliver a smooth yet exciting ride.”
