  • The countdown is on: Norco Factory Team is getting ready for World Cup #1 in Stellenbosch, South Africa

    March 7, 2018

After a successful season start in Spain on February 25, the Norco Factory Team is now all set and ready to kick off the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup on March 10 in Stellenbosch, South Africa, with an XCO-only event. Having trained hard all winter, the team is fired up and looking forward to race among the world’s best.

“My goal for World Cup #1 is to have fun, see where I’m at and hopefully have a good result in the process of things. My ultimate strategy is always to pin it and see where that lands me. I’m REALLY excited to get the ball rolling and race on the world stage again. The competitive fire is burning pretty hot right now, so I can’t wait to duke it out on a World Cup track.” – Haley Smith

Haley Smith will compete in the Elite Women’s category, Peter Disera, racing in his Elite National Champ jersey, will start among the Elite Men and Quinton Disera will kick off the World Cup in the U23 Men’s category, which will be the first race where U23 athletes will be entirely separated from their elite competitors. The Revolver FS will be the team’s bike of choice.

On race strategy and goals for the first World Cup of the year, Quinton said:

“Since it’s the first World Cup of the year, my main goal is going to be having a fully clean race and getting in the mix at the front. We don’t know where everyone is fitness wise after the winter so I’m going to have to make sure I stay within my limits but also dig deep!” – Quinton Disera

The race track offers a world-class setting for world-class athletes. With 180m of climbing per lap, the 4.3km course on the iconic trails of Coetzenburg mountain will be tough and technical, challenging the athletes with steep switch-back climbs, tricky drop-outs and fast descents.

UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Stellenbosch

Quinton and Peter have already had the chance to explore some places in and around Stellenbosch and test the race track in the past few days. They both love the course and are hyped about the upcoming race:

“The course is pretty rad. Quinton and I got a few laps on it and the jump section should be a lot of fun even when racing at max. The venue is nice and Stellenbosch has been lovely so far. I’m looking forward to getting on the start-line and seeing how I stack up against the best of the best. Additionally, there is a little bit of rain in the forecast so I’m looking forward to that hopefully tamping some of the dust down, otherwise anyone outside of the top 10 is going to be dusted out!” – Peter Disera

With March usually being extremely hot in South Africa, temperatures will most likely affect the riders and their strategy as well.

“The heat so far has been almost unbearable to us Canadians but we are getting used to it now. Remaining on top of hydration and proper fuelling throughout the week will be key.” – Peter Disera
